One killed as gang members clash with security forces in Bor

Acting Jonglei State Governor Atong Kuol Manyang confirmed Wednesday that at least one suspected member of a gang died following a clash with security forces.

The incident prompted immediate security measures to contain the situation.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Manyang explained that the majority of the gang members hailed from outside Jonglei State.

“Most of these gang members come from Central Equatoria (Juba), Unity, Northern Bahr el-Ghazal and Lakes states,” she said.

“They were coming here because they are worried about the crackdowns in their own areas. We want to make Jonglei a safe place, free from criminals,” she added.

The Acting Governor confirmed that three individuals have already been arrested in connection with the clash and assured the public that police have been directed to carry out a thorough investigation. Manyang urged community members to cooperate with the local authorities in maintaining law and order in Bor and the surrounding areas.

“Let us all work together because, at the end of the day, these lootings affect everybody. If things are looted, and shops reopen, prices will shoot up as traders try to compensate for their losses. It will be difficult for everyone,” the Governor added.

The violence has caused widespread panic across Bor, with many businesses closing for fear of looting. This has left many residents without access to food and other essential goods.

Local resident Jessica Ajok explained that her family, along with others, would go to bed hungry tonight due to the market closures.

“I went to the market this morning and found that almost every shop had been closed. For many families who depend on buying fresh items every day, it has been very difficult,” Ajok said.

Ajak Ayom expressed his worries about the safety of both the residents and the traders.

“The security forces need to be more professional in handling these situations,” Ayom said.

“The death of the young man could have been avoided if the soldier had acted with more caution. We also need to ensure that gangs do not exploit this situation and target traders in the market.”

The Jonglei State authorities have deployed additional security forces to restore peace and stability in Bor.
