One person was killed and 10 family members sustained serious injuries following a grenade explosion in Lakes State’s Yirol West County on Thursday.
Lakes State Police Spokesperson Maj Elijah Mabor Makuac told Radio Tamazuj that those injured were receiving treatment at the Yirol West County Hospital.
“An incident occurred in Kadula Village under Yirol West County when a 21-year-old man came home drunk and quarreled with his family members and later took his hand grenade and exploded it,” he said
Makuac said the suspect hurled the grenade at the family members, killing his 15-year-old sister and seriously injuring 10 others. He was also injured in the incident.
“All the victims were evacuated to Yirol West County Hospital for treatment. The investigations will continue but the suspect is in detention in hospital,” he said.
Makuac said the suspect is a civilian and the grenade belonged to his late father, who was a soldier.
“The hand grenade remained at home because the father failed to surrender it to the authorities,” he explained.
Makuac appealed that all security wares previously possessed by the late soldier be handed over to the authorities.
The Lakes State Civil Society Network Chairperson Angelina Adhel raised concern over the incident happening in a home.
She said it was important for the government of Lakes State to create awareness about the risks of keeping weapons in their houses.
