A 28-year-old man lost his life, and 11 others sustained injuries during a gunfire exchange with an unidentified group in Panyijiar County, Unity State, on Sunday, according to Commissioner Gabriel Majok Bol.

The incident occurred at the Panyijiar county market, where a group of armed youths clashed, resulting in one fatality and injuries to 11 individuals. The deceased, identified as Gatgok Gatluak, was killed while playing domino. Nine people were injured on one side, and two on the other, with no fatalities reported on the latter side.

The armed youth, suspected of engaging in criminal activities, were gathered in eastern Panyijiar. The conflict arose during a domino game at the market, escalating into gunfire around 5:25 am. The immediate response from the SSPDF confirmed one fatality and led to the arrest of two individuals involved in the criminal activities.

Commissioner Majok stated, “The armed youth, involved in criminal activities, had gathered in eastern Panyijiar within Panyijiar. There was an exchange of gunfire when they were playing on the road to Lake State, resulting in the SSPDF officer’s immediate demise. We arrested two among the criminals.”

“We are currently deploying security forces to apprehend those who have instilled fear in our community following the incident on Sunday,” Majok added.

He further explained, “We have already arrested two men involved in the Sunday incident at the market. The county police are actively searching for the remaining individuals responsible for the killing that occurred this week. We are putting in strenuous efforts to apprehend those involved in these crimes.”

Panyijiar County has been grappling with a series of security challenges throughout last year (2022). These challenges frequently involve armed youth participating in criminal activities within the county.
