One person was arrested on Thursday evening after the peaceful protests against the peace initiative between Jonglei and Boma states headed by the country’s First Vice President Taban Deng Gai.
The local youth demonstrated on Tuesday outside the venue of the meeting between Gai’s delegation and state officials while chanting anti-peace slogans.
The protesters shouted that “no peace without our cattle and children back,” refusing to give any chance to the First Vice President Taban Deng.
Multiple sources told Radio Tamazuj that Deng Anyang Ngong, a member of local civil society group Jonglei Institute for Peace, Democracy and Development (JIPDD) was arrested for participating in the protests against the peace initiative led by Taban Deng.
Meanwhile, ringleaders of the peaceful protests against the visit of the First Vice President Taban Deng Gai to Bor town said they have been threatened with arrests by security officials in the state.
“Yes, we have received phone calls from colleagues telling us to go into hiding. Three of us have been named as suspects,” said one of the protestors.
“We were told that national security officials are looking for us,” he added.
