Authorities in Rubkona County in Unity State have said that an old man identified as Bim Kuol drowned in floodwaters there on Tuesday morning.
The commissioner of Rubkona County, Gatluak Wichar, said the deceased drowned in the deluge between Bentiu Internally Displaced People’s (IDP) camp and Rubkona County.
“This (Tuesday) morning at 8:00 am an old man identified as Bim Kuol drowned and died because of flood waters in Rubkona County,” he said.
According to the commissioner, the people from the villages affected by floods in Rubkona County have relocated to higher ground in Rotriak Payam.
“Insecurity has reduced compared to last year, even the amount of heavy rainfall has dramatically dropped and it takes three to two days before it rains,” he explained. “The only remaining water is from last year’s flooding and the few current showers of rain but people can still drown people in the submerged villages in Rubkona County.”
Commissioner Wichar said the floods have led to an increase in the cases of malaria and other waterborne diseases but that health partners such as Concern worldwide and IOM are working hard to provide health services to the community in Rotriak Payam.
“The only problem is that the health facilities are not enough to cater for host and the displaced population,” he added.
