Officials seek shelter at UNMISS base in Juba

Several officials from the South Sudan’s proposed Bieh state on Sunday sought shelter in UNMISS compounds following heavy fighting between SPLA and SPLA-IO in Juba, according to opposition spokesperson Manawa Peter Gatkuoth.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Gatkuoth said the governor of Bieh state Bol Kong, his deputy Gen Taban Joth, and the speaker of the state legislative assembly sought shelter in UNMISS compounds.

He added that Gen Charles Lam the commander of SPLA Division 3 from Salva Kiir’s faction also sought shelter in a UN compound after reports that he has defected and joined the opposition, fearing that he could be targeted by the government forces.
