Officials in Yida allegedly demand payment from UN to allow food drops

Local authorities in South Sudan’s Unity State have reportedly asked the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to pay an amount of 30,000 SSP in order to be allowed to drop off food at Yida refugee camp.

Local authorities in South Sudan’s Unity State have reportedly asked the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to pay an amount of 30,000 SSP in order to be allowed to drop off food at Yida refugee camp.

Some local sources told Radio Tamazuj that UNHCR had run out of food supplies in its stores at the refugee camp.

The UN agency suspended food drops at Yida airstrip supposedly after it had failed to reach an agreement with local authorities over payment.

UNHCR reportedly said payment of an amount of 30,000 SSP for cleaning and expansion of the airstrip is too large an amount, according to a source.

Meanwhile, refugees expressed concern about the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in case food rations are not distributed in a timely way.

Separately, Samaritans’ Purse organization yesterday celebrated the Global Hand Washing Day in El Shabiya square of Yida camp under the theme “Clean Hands Sava Lives.”

The event was attended by numerous humanitarian organizations operating in the area as well as local authorities.
