The speaker of Aweil state legislative assembly Hon. Daniel Deng Ayom Ayom has reported that World Food Programme’s recent airdrops of food has attracted local people who are in dire need of assistance to migrate to Aweil town.
He said this has caused some confusions at food distribution points and among Relief and Rehabilitation Commission and government offices before their leaders were asked to talk to them to return to their homes and be registered there.
“Aweil is okay but few days ago when WFP begin dropping food was when many people from villages near the town came in the town and this has really caused some disturbances but it was handled peacefully. You know our people think that the government has any connection with WFP food and many of them came to government offices especially governor’s office claiming that they are denied ration cards and there is unfair registration going on which they want government to help them,” Deng said.
The member of parliament confirmed that last week over a thousand women gathered at the governor’s office protesting unfair registration and delay of distributions blaming on this on the Aweil town mayor and director of Mother and Care CSO. He called on WFP to start airdrops of food in other field areas identified so that overcrowding in Aweil town will reduce and people will turn also to their normal activities.
