A report compiled by Sudan’s National Council for Child Welfare showed that 12,300 cases of sexual assaults against children took place in 2014.
Osman El Agib, Chairman of the Child Protection Society, told Radio Tamazuj that the report released by the council indicates that there are over 12,000 cases of sexual assaults against children in schools, including Quranic schools. He added that the crimes were committed mostly by teachers and sheikhs.
“All these incidents took place on the outskirts of Khartoum. You know, the people are suffering in the peripheral areas of the capital,” he said.
Osman said the authorities do not want to make the report public. The activist pointed out that about 685 cases of sexual assaults have been pending in courts since 2013. He predicted death sentences would be issued soon against the perpetrators.
The child rights advocate said they presented a petition to the National Parliament last year to implement the death sentences against those criminals in public, but there has not been a response.
He stressed that child protection is a duty of every individual.
