Official: Returnees in Twic East in need of assistance

A top official in Twic East County of Jonglei State say hundreds of internal displaced persons who returned home to the area are in need of humanitarian helps at Wernyol Payam.

Wenyol Payam is one of the areas of Twic East County bordering Duk County of Jonglei that experienced disaster when civil war erupted in South Sudan two years ago, causing many to flee.

Dau Akoi Jurkuch, Twic East Commissioner told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that there are 21,000 IDPs that have returned to his county since January this year.

“There are not exact figures available but yesterday we received some IDPs returning from Minkaman, Toc, Uganda and Kakuma with their ration cards and they are coming daily,” he said.

The commissioner said that government and UN agency representatives toured the area of Wernyol Payam where the IDPs are putting up currently during the weekend.

He said they found that the IDPs are urgently in need of food, mosquito nets and water. He asked UN agencies to speed up the delivery of supplies.
