Official: Over 1000 families displaced by Tonj North clan violence

A Tonj North official confirmed more than 1000 families have been displaced from Akok area due to inter-communal clashes between Akok and Marial Lou clans in May.

Lazarus Dwar, acting coordinator for South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Tonj North county, He said dozens were killed from both sides.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Dwar said they have registered 120 displaced families from Akok in Tonj town and 420 families on the road liking Akok and Tonj, while 652 families were registered in Akok area.

He added that the displaced have no shelters amid the rainfalls and face shortages of food and drugs. He urged humanitarian organizations to intervene to rescue the situation.

Meanwhile, activists from Tonj North told Radio Tamazuj there is displacement from Marial Lou as well to Tonj East, without mentioning any further details.

Commissioner of Tonj North County, Tito Sijin, told Radio Tamazuj earlier that 24 children and women were killed in clashes between the two clans since 9 to 29 May.

He said people from both clans fled their homes as a result. confirming displacement from both clans.
