A South Sudanese observer has urged the government to take the recent statement issued by the United State of America seriously, warning against unspecified consequences of counterattacks.

Dr. James Okuk, a political science lecturer at the University of Juba, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that South Sudan will be under mounting pressure from the international community because of the ongoing devastating conflict.

“South Sudan is at a crossroads now because of the current situation. The statement of the United States should be taken seriously because international pressure will continue to mount on South Sudan always,” he said.

Okuk said South Sudan leaders need to sit down to find amicable solutions to the ongoing conflict in the country, describing the US statement on South Sudan as serious.

“After the United States said it has lost patience, I think the next step will start with actions, not statements again, “he said.

The South Sudanese observer warned the government in Juba against possible consequences of counterattacks, while urging the Kiir administration to work for peace in the country. “There should be good news in the next round of peace talks because the statements being issued by the international community are warnings for South Sudan to make peace,” he said.

The United States said recently that it was giving up on the government of South Sudan, pointing out that the current government led by President Salva Kiir has lost credibility.

“The Government of South Sudan has lost credibility, and the United States is losing patience,” the White House declared in a recent statement.
