Nyirol youth elect new leaders

A new executive has been elected to lead the Nyirol County Youth Association for Peace and Development.

The election held at the Jonglei State headquarters on Saturday, saw Koch Mamit Chol become the group’s new chairperson for a two-year term. Chol defeated Gatluak Mayuak by garnering 28 of the 45 valid votes.

The information secretary of the electoral committee, Sigin Gatkek, told Radio Tamazuj that the vote was free and fair.

“The election went on well and all the contestants were comfortable with the results,” he said.

Changkuoth Yoal Rial was elected the secretary general, Mawit Pur Jany, the finance secretary, and Nyuon Baloc Leu, the culture and sports secretary.

The new chairperson appreciated the Nyirol youth for tasking him with leading them and pledged to work for peace and development.

The outgoing chairperson, Biel Jiek Lual, said he was happy to have served the youth and urged the new leadership to take on from where he left.

“This body is for the welfare of the youth and the county as a whole. The election ended well and I appeal to the new team to take on from where I left and serve everyone,” he said.

The youth associations are influential in South Sudan, as youngsters account for over 70 percent of the country’s population.
