More than 2,000 heads of cattle stolen during a raid in Nyirol County of Jonglei State were recovered on Thursday, local officials said.
Biel Jiek Lual, the county information director, told Radio Tamazuj that the cattle stolen by youths suspected to have come from Ayod County Wednesday were recovered a day later after the attackers were pursued.
“Those cattle were taken from the Nyabor area. Our youths followed them and recovered all the cattle, and in the process, only one herdsman was injured,” he said.
Brig. John Deng, the county police inspector, also confirmed the recovery of the stolen animals.
“About 2600 cows were raided from Nyabor village in Pading Payam on Wednesday evening. But our youths and the police later managed to recover the stolen cattle,” he said.
For his part, Gabriel Tot Kai, the Ayod SPLM party secretary, said they had no information about the attack.
“For the last three years, there have been ongoing peace initiatives between Uror, Nyirol and Ayod counties. So we are still on that track, and if there was any cattle raid, we think it was carried out by criminals,” he said.
