A herdsman was killed and 68 head of cattle raided in separate attacks carried out by armed men in Nyirol County of Jonglei State on Monday, local officials said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, James Bol Makuey, the Nyirol County commissioner, said in one of the attacks 12 houses were set on fire.
“One of the attacks took place in Tut Payam in which they burnt 12 abandoned houses. They also attacked Pultruk Payam’s Nyangwel area killing a herdsman and taking 50 head of cattle, and then Bindoor taking 12 cattle,” he said.
The commissioner accused armed youth suspected to have come from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) of the attack.
Both Jal, the county information director, said they unsuccessfully pursued the attackers he said came from GPAA’s Likuanguole area and called on the authorities there to monitor the situation and arrest the culprits.
For his part, Nyany Korok, the GPAA deputy head of their human rights commission, said they yet to be informed about the attack by the Nyirol counterparts.
