At least three herdsmen were killed and three others injured in a cattle raid carried out by a group of armed youth in Nyirol County of Jonglei State on Tuesday, authorities said.

James Bol Makuey, the county commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj that the attack in the county’s Keth village was orchestrated by armed youth suspected to have come from Ayod’s Mogog area.

“These criminals came from Mogog. It happened (Tuesday) at 3 pm and they killed 3 people in Keth, Pading Payam. Three others were injured,” Commissioner Bol said. “The injured ones have been transferred to Langkien and they are receiving treatment at a facility here.”

He said he is engaging his Ayod counterpart to resolve the problem.

“This issue has become a serious problem and I have been trying my best to normalize the situation. The problem is that the commissioner of Ayod has been blocked from accessing Mogog,” he said.

Makuei Puok Bai, a Pading community leader, condemned the attack and called for urgent government intervention to restore calm among youths from the two counties before the situation escalates.

Phone calls to the Ayod County commissioner went unanswered.
