A herdsman was killed during a cattle raid in Nyirol County, Jonglei state on Thursday, authorities said.

James Bol Makuey, the Nyirol County commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj over the weekend that the deceased was herding cattle when he was killed by assailants in Pading Payam last Thursday afternoon.

“About 200 cows were stolen during the raid but they were later recovered. The one who was herding the cows was killed,” he said.

The county commissioner accused armed youth from Ayod County of involvement in the attack.

“We have normalized the situation. I spoke to the Ayod commissioner to control the situation and now there is no problem,” he said.

Makuei Puok, a Pading community leader, condemned the attack and called on the government to intervene.

“The man killed by the raiders from Ayod is a herdsman called Malith Lith. We condemn the attack as a community and called on the government to intervene so that such incidents are not repeated,” he said.

Ayod County Commissioner James Chuol Jiek could not immediately be reached for comment.
