Authorities in Nyirol County in Jonglei State said an investigation is ongoing into an incident in which gunmen attacked and injured a youth leader in the county headquarters, Langkien town, on Tuesday.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Brig. Gen. John Deng, the county police inspector, said the youth leader, identified as Nhial Gatluak Kueth was attacked and injured while in his house Tuesday night, and that an investigation had since been launched to apprehend the suspects.
“On Tuesday at 11 pm, some armed criminals stormed the house of a youth leader and looted phones. As the youth leader tried defending himself he was shot and injured in his leg,” he said. “The attackers then escaped and now as police, we are searching for those involved.”
The county police inspector disclosed that preliminary information suggests the attack was a robbery.
“Up to now, we have not made any arrest. Here, we have criminals from within and ones outside the county. In our investigation, we found out that the incident was not a revenge attack,” he said.
For his part, Biel Jiek Lual, the Nyirol County information director, also confirmed the incident and said the county had since remained calm.
