The number of street and vulnerable children in South Sudan’s Aweil state is on the increase, a senior official at the education ministry said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Joseph Mel, who is in charge of gender and social development department at the state ministry of education, said the street children accounts for nearly one thousand.

The official has raised concern over the rising number of street children in the town, saying the state government is facing challenges to build a rehabilitation centre to accommodate the children and get them off the streets.

According to Mel, the street children will definitely prefer the rehabilitation centre over their homes. He pointed out that the vulnerable children do not have access to food, healthcare and other basic needs.
