A statement attributed to Nuer university students has claimed that a dozen students were arrested in Wau, Western Bahr al Ghazal, during the violence there last weekend.

In the statement, the Naath (Nuer) Students Union in Universities and Higher Institutes (NSUHI) said that some members disappeared during the incidents in Wau.

The statement said that the students were studying at the Western Bhar el Ghazal University when the violence broke out in the state, first at Mapel and then in Wau.

“One of our students was initially arrested in the night of 26 April 2014. On 27 April, 2014, when Nuer students realized that their lives were in danger, they decided to leave the university’s hostels for UNMISS’s camp,” the statement reads.

It adds that while they were walking to the UNMISS camp “some of them were captured on the road by SPLA individual soldiers and personnel.”

The statement explains that the students had to pass the SPLA Grinti barracks in order to reach the UN camp.

“From there, on the way, a dozen of Students were arrested and taken to unknown places,” says the students’ union.

“While the rest are not found up to now, that is why we are writing this press statement,” says the Naath Students Union, adding that they urge the University Administration and government to make efforts to locate the whereabouts of the missing students.
