Nuer refugees refuse relocation to Khartoum’s Bentiu camp

Hundreds of Nuer families living in Al Shajera camp on the outskirts of Khartoum have reportedly refused relocation to an area called Bentiu south of the capital city.

Hundreds of Nuer families living in Al Shajera camp on the outskirts of Khartoum have reportedly refused relocation to an area called Bentiu south of the capital city.

Local authorities in Sudan’s Khartoum State recently announced that 1,226 South Sudanese refugees were transported to Bentiu camp.

They added that remaining 147 families that will be transported next week to Joda camp in White Nile State, where they will proceed to South Sudan.

A source from the Sudanese Refugee Affairs commission said nearly 800 South Sudanese refugees from the Nuer tribe have refused to go to Bentiu camp and that they threatened to stage protests over the matter.

The Nuer refugees said Dinka refugees have already settled in the new site, according to the same source.

The refusal came in the backdrop of the ongoing South Sudan civil war, in which Dinka and Nuer largely fight on opposing sides.
