Local authorities in Unity State have confirmed that a notorious criminal was gunned down in Rubkona County of Unity State in the wee hours of Wednesday morning when he tried to steal cattle.
The police commissioner in Unity State, Major General Bol Mayank, told Radio Tamazuj that the deceased, identified as Gatkuoth Nhial Monytuil, was shot dead at night by armed cattle keepers when he tried to steal their animals. He said the deceased was a notorious criminal who has just escaped from jail in Mayom County.
"I sent the police to the scene where he was killed. The police initially refused to hand over the dead body to the relatives because it had not been identified. After identification by the relatives, it was given to them and they buried him yesterday (Thursday),” Gen. Mayank said.
He said the situation in the county was calm.
The commissioner of Mayom County, Chuol Gatluak Manime, said that the late Nhial Monytuil was a known criminal who was arrested for 15 days but he managed to escape from jail in Mayom only to meet his fate in Rubkona County. He added that the authorities in Rubkona were investigating who pulled the trigger.
"No, the suspects who killed him must be known because he was killed in the presence of many people at night. Only that investigation into who killed is going on and the relatives of the deceased are for the burial. We heard that he didn't take anything valuable when he was killed. He was just killed innocently,” Commissioner Gatluak said.
The Unity state information minister, Gabriel Hon Makuei, said that he was not informed about the incident.
