A notorious armed youth killed a policeman and injured two others during an attempt by members of joint security forces led by the commissioner of Rumbek Centre County to arrest him at noon on Wednesday.
The police spokesperson in Lakes State, Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that joint security forces are pursuing the suspect. He said the suspect is the most wanted criminal who killed two people at Cueicok and along the road to Rumbek North County.
“The criminal was intercepted and the security forces went to the place with the commissioner of Rumbek Centre County to arrest him,” he said. “The suspect clashed with security forces at Yar Malual Kodi village leading to the killing of one police personnel and wounding two others, one from police and the other from the SSPDF.”
Maj. Mabor added: “Unfortunately, he resisted the force and managed to kill one policeman and fled. The security forces are still following him and he must be arrested”.
He said the two security personnel who were wounded are being treated at Rumbek State Hospital.
“I would like our people to cooperate with security forces, and to give information about the whereabouts of this criminal so that he can be apprehended,” Mabor stated.
A civil society activist in Lakes State, Angelina Adhel Malual, said citizens should not turn against law enforcement officers and the military.
“I have seen this many times when police and soldiers are sent to rescue the situation and then the community turns against them,” she said. “This must end in 2025 and people must respect uniforms.”
