The governor of Northern Liech State, Joseph Nguen Monytuil has blamed the insecurity prevailing in his state on proliferation of arms in the hands of civilians.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Governor Monytuil said the proliferation of firearms in the hands of young people is the main cause of insecurity in Northern Liech and neighboring states.
Clashes on Tuesday between armed men from Twic and Northern Liech States left dozens of people dead.
"The spread of weapons is the main reason for the clashes and chaos in the region because of cattle rustling," he said.
He, however, vowed to tackle insecurity at borders, but stressed that border points should be protected by a joint police force, not cattle keepers.
Monytuil said a previous peace conference in the region had recommended collection of weapons from the hands of citizens, but the practice is widespread.
Cattle raids have claimed several lives since South Sudan’s independence in 2011. Cattle are a main source of wealth for many communities.
