Northern Bahr el Ghazal begins culvert construction to curb flooding

Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has begun constructing culverts in flood-prone areas to mitigate damage from heavy rains, Governor Simon Ober Mawut said on Sunday.

The project, aimed at improving drainage and road connectivity, involves installing culverts—tunnels that channel water under roads—to prevent blockages that worsen flooding.

Speaking at the launch in Aweil, Governor Mawut said the initiative includes clearing waterways and reinforcing key roads ahead of the rainy season.

“We are addressing persistent floods by opening waterways, adding culverts, and improving road links between Aweil and our counties,” he said.

The effort, a partnership with Africa Resources Corporation (ARC), will focus on critical routes to ensure smoother travel, he added.

State Information Minister Gabriel Deng Yel said culverts would be placed strategically across all counties.

“A single culvert box requires seven bags of cement, and we’re producing many for road repairs in Aweil East, West, North, South, and Center,” Yel said. “This marks the start of our flood mitigation plan.”

Flooding has plagued South Sudan in recent years, displacing thousands and damaging infrastructure.
