The governor of North Darfur State, Osman Kibir, announced that the oil exploration operations at the Nikheila field in Block 12, in the north-eastern part of the state, have passed the pilot production stage.
“The production is nearing the level of marketing,” the governor told the press in state capital El Fasher on Monday.
Kibir confirmed that oil exploration is ongoing in the rural area of Wabed, in the vicinity of El Fasher. He also pointed to evidence of the presence of oil in the area of Abu Sufyan, located in the south-eastern part of the state.
According to Kibir, huge quantities of high quality iron ore could be extracted from Kutum locality in particular. He said that also gold is found in a number of North Darfur localities, apart from El Sareif Beni Hussein.
The governor emphasised the “serious commitment of the North Darfur State government to work hard with the competent authorities of the federal government to create a favourable climate for national and foreign investments”.
