The water sector in North Darfur state has announced the successful completion of the 2024 budget proposal. Engineer Abdul Shafi Abdullah Adam, the Director of the Water Sector in the state, told Radio Tamazuj that the preparation includes three chapters: The Office of the Director General, the General Administration of Urban Water, and the General Administration of Rural Water, along with the Water and Environmental Sanitation Project.

Adam highlighted that the state’s water sector has been significantly impacted by the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has been ongoing for eight months since mid-April.

Adam highlighted the challenges arising from the ongoing war, manifesting in the obstacles to acquiring production inputs such as fuel, power outages, and maintenance tools. This has led to a crisis in the provision of water services in El Fasher city.

To address these challenges in the 2024 budget, a substantial portion has been allocated for transitioning from diesel to alternative energy, specifically “solar energy,” aiming to decrease operating and maintenance expenses.

Adam anticipates that this budget adjustment will play a crucial role in alleviating citizens’ living costs by ensuring the provision of safe and sustainable water in North Darfur.
