Civilians fleeing the ongoing fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s North Darfur state are faced with a deepening humanitarian crisis, an official said.
Thousands of families were forced to leave their homes amid continued fighting.
Nimir Mohamed Abdulrahman, the North Darfur State Governor, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that his government has continued to deliver aid to the internally displaced civilians through the Humanitarian Aid Commission in the state but that it is not sufficient.
“The humanitarian situation is catastrophic and requires an urgent intervention from aid organizations and the UN agencies,” he said. “We, at the government level, did our best to rescue the situation as soon as possible.”
He pointed out that WFP has responded to their appeal and provided some aid assistance to the affected civilians.
Governor Mohamed reiterated his call to other aid organizations to urgently provide essential aid to the internally displaced people.
Presently, Al-Fashir town hosts over 50,000 internally displaced people since the outbreak of the conflict in the capital Khartoum in April 2023 spread to other parts of the country.
