North Darfur: Food crisis looms as IDP centers kitchen ceases operations

The Emergency Room in Al-Kuma Locality has announced the suspension of the shared kitchen services at the displacement centers.

Al Kuma is a locality located about 70 kilometers east of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State. It is situated on the main Western Inqaz Road which connects Darfur to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

The head of the Emergency Room, Salih Harireen, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the decision was due to lack of support.

“The shared kitchen project at the IDP centers has ceased after running for about two weeks due to a lack of support and financial resources,” said Harireen, who indicated that efforts were being made to restore the operations.

The kitchen provided food at the centers and its cessation will exacerbate the humanitarian situation for the displaced and those fleeing the conflict in Al-Kuma.

Harireen confirmed that the conditions for displaced persons at the centers were dire and would worsen with the suspension of the shared kitchen, compounded by flooding due to heavy rainfall. He noted that some residents were living in shelters made from local materials and were in need of alternatives, tents, and mosquito nets.

Harireen called on international and national organizations to provide urgent humanitarian assistance.

In a separate development, several students and Quran memorizers have graduated from the Al-Siraj Al-Muneer Institute for Women’s Quran Memorization in Al-Kuma Locality.

The event was presided over by Al-Nazer Abdallah Adam Joz, the head of the traditional administration in Al-Kuma, along with several other executive leaders.

The graduation ceremony was well attended by local residents and the representative of various organisations.
