Citizens in the residential areas in El Fasher town in Sudan’s North Darfur state have complained about water cuts for several days without clear reasons.
Since the outbreak of war in Sudan, the city of El Fasher has hosted thousands of people fleeing due to the battles in Tawila and Kutum localities, and the city of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, which is still witnessing the flight of residents.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, several residents of El Fasher town expressed their discontent over the cut of water services, which exacerbated their suffering.
Fatima Adam, a resident of the Nakheel neighborhood, said citizens in the rest of the neighborhoods have been complaining about water outages since last Thursday, while citizens in the Nakheel neighborhood have not had access to water since last August.
“This has exacerbated the suffering of our children. We are also suffering due to the insecurity conditions that the city is currently experiencing,” she said.
Fatima is urging the competent authorities to provide water, allowing them to enjoy the same level of stability as residents in other neighborhoods.
Engineer Khaled Ishaq, Director of the Distribution Department at the General Administration of Urban Water, said that the water supply, which includes sources in the Shaqra al-Wadi and Al-Quoz areas, the main station, has stopped since last Thursday.
Ishaq attributed the interruption of the water supply to the power outage in the city’s water line as a result of the lack of fuel.
Engineer Mohammed Adam Kashif, Director of the General Administration of Rural Water and Vice Chairman of the High Water Emergency Committee, had recently warned of the cut of basic services, including water, in North Darfur if the regional, state, and federal governments did not seek to provide fuel for operating the power station in the city of El Fasher.
