North Darfur: Displaced persons in Abu Shouk camp voice health and security concerns

Some residents of Abu Shouk camp in El Fasher, North Darfur, are expressing distress over deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions following recent clashes between the Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces.

Some residents of Abu Shouk camp in El Fasher, North Darfur, are expressing distress over deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions following recent clashes between the Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces.

Camp leader Sheikh Mukhtar Adam Ahmed disclosed to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the inhabitants are grappling with adverse living conditions due to security challenges and a decline in health standards.

With aid from the World Food Organization halted, residents face uncertainty, witnessing the emergence of malnutrition in children, weakened immunity in pregnant women, and an increase in malaria and infections.

Women’s rights activist Husna Adam Abdullah expressed concern about the worsening security and health conditions, making it increasingly challenging for displaced individuals to sustain their lives.

“There are 28 blocks housing displaced people from Tawila, Kutum, Nyala, and Abuja camp, alongside veterans. Despite this significant population, we only have one health center, lacking sufficient emergency supplies,” Husna noted.

She disclosed a complete halt in support and humanitarian services from organizations and other entities that were previously assisting them, further complicating the situation. Abdullah highlighted the critical shortage of medicines and sanitary pads for pregnant women and girls.

In an appeal to humanitarian organizations, she urged them to resume providing aid. Additionally, she called upon organizations dedicated to women’s rights to extend a helping hand by supplying sanitary pads and medicines for the affected women.

She further appealed to both conflicting parties to halt the ongoing war, emphasizing that it is the civilians who suffer the most, facing death and destruction.

Ahmed Hussein Adroub, head of the media committee for the armed struggle movements, reported on Tuesday to Radio Tamazuj that clashes on the northern side of the camp resulted in two fatalities and ten injuries. These incidents have significantly worsened the living conditions within the camp.
