Tonj state's education ministry says that Tonj secondary school lacks teachers, pointing out that most of the teacher went for further studies without the ministry’s permission.

“There were 20 teachers appointed by the governor last year, all these teachers have left teaching for further studies, so we issued a notification two weeks ago so that these teachers report back to teaching,” said Education Minister Deng told Radio Tamazuj on Monday.

“We will form a committee to terminate their contracts and we will appoint new teachers to teach,” he added.

The minister also pointed out that the quality of education in the secondary school has been affected by the absence of the teachers, besides the lack of textbooks.

He promised that the ministry will buy textbooks from the market as they await textbooks from the national ministry.

The education official also appointed Mayom Lual Baak as the new head teacher of Tonj Secondary, saying the school administration was also to blame.

Baak said the school faces many challenges but acknowledged that the economic hardships may have forced the teachers quit.

Last week, students of Tonj secondary school said the school was at a brink of collapse due to the lack of teachers. They further said in most subjects they had not touched on any chapter since the beginning of the year.
