The English daily newspaper, No.1 Citizen, on Monday, resumed publication and circulation after over a month of suspension by South Sudan’s Media Authority.

The newspaper was suspended last year on 6 December over what the media regulator called “non-compliance”.

Maurice Dogga, the newspaper’s managing editor, confirmed the resumption of publications.

“The suspension was lifted and effected on Friday by the media authority,” Dogga said. “So, we officially came to the office on Sunday and then resumed the publication today (Monday).”

The President of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS), Patrick Oyet Charles, welcomes the re-opening of the paper.

“As a UJOSS, we welcome the re-opening of the paper not only because it provides information to the public, but also because it provides employment to a number of journalists who are actually our members. So it is very important and we are happy about it,” Oyet said.

He added: “We believe that any positive development such as opening a new media house or re-opening media houses that were previously closed or suspended for one reason or another will promote the good of the entire media in the country. So, this is a welcome move.”

The media regulator also ordered that the proprietor of the paper, Stella Kiden Mandela, be the Editor-in-Chief.
