NSS officer accused of shooting a peacekeeper in Yei arrested

An officer with the South Sudan National Securty Service (NSS) accused of shooting at a peacekeeper and terrorizing citizens at gunpoint in South Sudan’s Yei River State has been arrested and is in military detention pending investigations, a state official said.

Earlier this week, an officer shot and injured a Nepalese peacekeeper in Yei town causing fear among Yei residents in the midst of deteriorating security situation with random shootings and recent clashes in Kupera County in the outskirts of Yei Town.

David John, a security advisor to the state governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony told Radio Tamazuj that the accused officer is currently undergoing thorough investigation.

“Yes a peace keeper was shot and the soldier who shot at the peacekeeper has been arrested and he is currently under detention as I am talking to you. The forces are under control and the commanders have been ordered by the governor to maintain professional law and order,” he said.

John added that the situation is now under control and calm has returned to the town.
