Bursts of gunfire within Renk, South Sudan’s northernmost town, have caused panic among local residents, according to a source in the town.
Several families fled the town after hearing gunshots on Saturday night, while local authorities suggested that the incident was just a clash within the ranks of the opposition forces on the western bank of the Nile, the same source told Radio Tamazuj on Monday.
Local authorities said they are in full control of the county, reassuring that the security situation is still calm.
Separately, the World Food Program (WFP) in collaboration with other humanitarian organizations began distributing food rations to affected people in the Joda area of Renk County along the Upper Nile-Sudan border.
El Jak Jarko, a chief of Joda South area, told Radio Tamazuj that aid agencies including the WFP have distributed food rations to the needy people yesterday.
“We have received all food rations except sorghum,” Jarko said.
