About 100 women from the Misseriya and Ngok Dinka tribes have gathered in Amith village in the contested area of Abyei for a two-day peace conference aimed at bolstering the role of women in peace-building between the two tribes.
The woman’s conference is supported by the British-based organization Concordis which is trying to bring reconciliation between the two peoples.
Joseph Mamier, Liaison Officer of the Concordis organization, told Radio Tamazuj that the conference aims at strengthening the role of women in the peace process.
Meanwhile, Afaf Arop, Chairlady of Women’s Union in Abyei, commended the role played by Concords in peace-building between the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya tribes.
“The conference was a good initiative from Concords and I thank them for brining women together to participate in the peace program, because they are the most affected by wars and conflicts,” said Afaf.
For her part, Khadija Sarsar, a participant from the Misseriya tribe, called for an end to conflicts between the two sides, saying many Misseriya women are widows due to the ongoing conflict between the two tribes.
“We as Misseriya women, we have had enough war, Misseriya women have become widows and their children are orphans because of war, “said Khadija.
The conference is scheduled to conclude today.
