A team representing the nine Ngok Dinka sheikhdoms has handed the outcome of the unilateral Abyei referendum to the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly, on Friday.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the head of the Abyei Ngok Dinka team, Ambassador Chol Deng Alak, stated that the team has presented the outcome of the unilateral Abyei referendum to the Speaker of South Sudan National Legislative Assembly, Manas Magok Rundial, for approval and recognition.
Meanwhile the Khartoum-based Abyei Stakeholders have formed a follow-up committee regarding an amicable solution for the disputed area.
In a press statement, the head of the committee, Mahmoud Abdelkarim Ibrahim, explained that his team is tasked to draw a road map in order to resolve the Abyei issue and then present it to the Sudanese president Omar Al Bashir for final adoption.
The stakeholder stressed the importance of adjusting the existing institutions and the nurturing of peaceful coexistence between the tribes.
South Sudan’s executive arm had announced that it will not recognise any unilateral referendum in Abyei.
Sudan and South Sudan disagreed on the final status of the oil-rich area of Abyei in October as per the proposal of Thabo Mbeki.
The chairperson of the African Union Commission acknowledged the rejection of the Government of South Sudan of any unilateral action in Abyei. In a communiqué issued last October, the Commission called on the international community, including the UN, to condemn the “unilateral and irresponsible action” in Abyei, and to prevail upon those concerned to cease it immediately.
