Alalit International, a local NGO operating in East Darfur State, has stepped in with financial support for health insurance to revive four health centers in Al Daein locality (Al-Safa, Al-Qubba, Al-Arab, Al-Sikka), ensuring free treatment for all citizens.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, Idris Kabour Shakra, Director of Population Coverage in Health Insurance in East Darfur State, highlighted the joint initiative with the National Health Insurance Fund, aiming to reopen these health centers and offer complimentary services to citizens.

“Last December, we signed a memorandum of understanding with the organization to open four treatment centers in the city of Al Daein,” Idris said.

He explained that these centers had ceased operations during months of conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces. Kabour emphasized the commitment to providing free services to citizens and displaced individuals from other cities, stating, “The project includes treatment, health education, and vaccination for children, in addition to providing 800 food baskets to people suffering from malnutrition or pregnant women.”

“With organization support, the Ministry of Health will maintain a hall, rehabilitate four operating rooms across centers, and upgrade the main operating room at Al Daein Hospital,” stated Kabour. He highlighted that the three-month project, which may be renewed and expanded, encompasses all health insurance services across the state’s nine localities.

Kabour explained that health insurance typically offers treatment to cardholders from both public and private sectors, with monthly deductions from salaries. However, in the aftermath of the war and the suspension of monthly salaries, health insurance ceased treating around one million subscribers in East Darfur, including employees, merchants, and low-income individuals, with the Zakat Office covering their subscription fees.
