The newly appointed Aweil West County commissioner, Abuol Akok Akok, was sworn in and assumed her duties last Friday in the presence of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Governor Brigadier General Simon Uber Mawut.
A member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, Akok replaces Garang Peter Maduok who was removed from the seat on 18 November.
The new commissioner was a former parliament at the National Legislature, a source who attended the swearing-in ceremony but preferred anonymity to the publication.
“Hon. Abuol Akok Akok was sworn in office yesterday (Friday) and she has officially assumed her duties,” the source confirmed. “She is not a military personnel but a former Member of Parliament at the National Legislative Assembly and her party reassigned her to the new role.”
Meanwhile, Commissioner Akok thanked the presidency for appointing her to the position via her X handle.
“I want to thank President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar for giving me the best opportunity to be the first female commissioner of Aweil West County and my message to the people of Aweil West is to support peace and unity so that our people are comfortable,” she wrote. “If we do not have peace, we cannot achieve anything, but if we have peace, we can achieve more for our people and it is our commitment to make our people relaxed.”
