Andrea Mayar Achor, Salva Kiir’s newly appointed governor in Wau, said Saturday he was doing everything within his power to restore law and order for people who fled the violence last weekend to return to their homes.
Governor Mayar said he and the national government-appointed committee headed by the Minister of Health Riek Gai Kok had visited all the areas in town to which civilians have fled and held meetings with them.
Mayar succeeds Elias Waya, whom Kiir appointed as the first governor of the controversial ‘Wau State’, one of two proposed successor states to Western Bahr al Ghazal.
“There are certain things which the government is working on to address. One of these things is the stabilization of security so that there is order and provide protection to civilians. But the most important thing is the need for the civilians who have fled their homes to be assisted to return because they fled with nothing and now some of their houses have been affected.”
“They need food, they need shelter, medicines and indeed security,” said governor Mayar. He pointed out that security has been addressed by increasing the number of patrols.
“The situation has improved. People are returning to their homes,” he claimed. “I visited those who fled to UNMISS camp yesterday (Friday) and talked to them. I also visited those in the church and I talked to them. They need support and as the state government, our resources are limited but we are trying our best to address the situation,” he said.
“I have directed security organs and the army to allow humanitarian organizations to move freely, so that they discharge their duties in assisting these people,” Andrea added.
