New Warrap governor welcomes peace deal, calls for support

The new caretaker governor of South Sudan’s Warrap state announced Monday his administration supports the compromise peace agreement and called on politicians to mobilise support of the local population towards implementation.

The new caretaker governor of South Sudan’s Warrap state announced Monday his administration supports the compromise peace agreement and called on politicians to mobilise support of the local population towards implementation.

Alec Tong Aleu said signing the peace deal demonstrated “strong leadership” on the part of President Salva Kiir, who hails from Warrap.

The deputy head of the state parliamentary committee for information and public relations Ariech Mayar Ariech said caretaker governor Alec will travel to national capital Juba next week to meet with Kiir to express his administration’s support for implementating the agreement.

Ariech added that Alec was the first senior official to welcome the signing of the deal and to congratulate Kiir.

Separately, Ariech said Alec will commence his term with a visit to the border between Gogrial East and West counties to call for reconciliation and unity between the two communities which have been involved in deadly clashes.

He said the team will visit Ajugo where the Aguok and Apuk communities clashed.

“We are taking the message of peace, love, unity, and reconciliation,” he said. “We want them to support the new governor in maintaining security so that he can deliver basic services to them in a stable environment.”
