The governor of Warrap State, Kuol Muor Muor, on Wednesday, set up two peace committees during a peace rally in Gogrial West County.
He tasked the two committees with separately investigating the recent clashes between the Aguok and Kuacthii communities of Gogrial West County over Muonyjang cattle camp and the repeated clashes over Manyang Payam which was claimed by the Apuuk Community Warrap State’s Gogrial East County and the people of Jur River County in Western Bahr El Ghazal State respectively.
Gogrial West County Commissioner Victor Wek Koordit told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that the conflict over the Muonyjang cattle camp claimed more than six lives last year and had created enmity between the two communities which resulted in insecurity.
“The peace meeting was to resolve the conflict between the Aguok and Kuacthii communities over their claims to Muonyjang cattle camp and that is why Governor Kuol Muor called all chiefs from both sides and national and state members of parliament to come and talk peace,” he said. “The result was good and the two communities accepted to restore peace in the presence of the governor.”
Wek added: “The two communities agreed not to burn houses and to help identify criminals who will then be prosecuted.”
He said the two peace committees comprise 15 men and women each consisting of national and state legislators, security personnel, and women and youth representatives and chiefs.
Meanwhile, Warrap State Information Minister William Wol Mayom said the peace conference will ensure that 2024 is a year of peace and stability.
“The peace and security rally in Gogrial West County today (Wednesday) aims to restore peace and investigate the injury of a youth who was shot in the arm last week by an unknown gunman at the swampy area in Lil Magac near Kuajok while he was riding a motorcycle,” he explained. “This year is for peace in Warrap State that is why Governor Kuol formed many peace committees in hotspot areas including Muonyjang, Twic, Lou Ariik, and Manyang to help identify perpetrators, investigate and file up all cases for accountability.”
Minister Wol also revealed that the state government plans to build headquarters in five counties across Warrap State.
