New USAID chief arrives in South Sudan

The US has announced the arrival of the new USAID Mission Director David Thompson in South Sudan.

US Ambassador to South Sudan Michael J. Adler made the announcement in a press release on Monday.

“US Ambassador to South Sudan Michael J. Adler is pleased to announce the arrival of US Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director for South Sudan David Thompson,” reads the press release. 

USAID is the largest donor to South Sudan with an assistance portfolio that includes humanitarian, food security, health, education, and democracy and good governance activities. 

Prior to joining the US mission in South Sudan, Thompson served as Power Africa Deputy Coordinator, based in Pretoria, South Africa from 2020 to 2024. 

Thompson began his 30-year career as a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Tanzania.

He has also served in Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Western Hemisphere.
