The newly appointed UN head in South Sudan Ellen Margrethe Loej said she strongly supports the East African regional body the Intergovernment Authority on Development (IGAD) in trying to restore peace and stability in South Sudan.

This comes in a meeting after South Sudanese Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin in the premises of ministry yesterday.

Loej said she will exert great effort to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to conflict-displaced citizens who are currently sheltering inside UN Protection of Civilians sites in the country.

Marial stressed that his government will work closely with the UN mission in South Sudan. He described his meeting with the new UN special representative as “fruitful.”

He said they discussed issues pertaining to security and human rights across the country.

Loej is the Special Representative to the UN Secretary General (SRSG) Ban Ki Moon in South Sudan.  She is from Denmark and arrived in Juba on 2 September.  Loej previously served as SRSG at the UN Mission in Liberia from 2008 to 2012.

She succeeds Hilde F. Johnson of Norway, who completed her assignment on 7 July.
