New top chiefs in rebel-held ‘Sobat State’

New paramount chiefs were elected last week for Doma and Ulang Counties within the rebel-controlled ‘Sobat State’, located in what is otherwise known as eastern Upper Nile State.

New paramount chiefs were elected last week for Doma and Ulang Counties within the rebel-controlled ‘Sobat State’, located in what is otherwise known as eastern Upper Nile State.

Oter Kier Wal won the election for paramount chief with the votes of 11 chiefs. His rival Deng Ruach failed to get the post by scoring 10 votes only. The third candidate Tor Majiok had stepped down before the election day.

In the Ulang County election, Gatluak Dak Jack won after getting 30 votes out of 42 votes. The second candidate get 10 votes while the last one Jack Riek Jack got only 2 votes.

Both of the elections were peaceful. The chairman of the elections for both counties Tut Maluoth encourage the traditional leaders to work together with county administrations as well as the state government.

The Ulang Paramount Chief took the oath of the office in front of Commissioner Khor Wal Pal, who advised all traditional leaders to work hand in hand with the new paramount chief in the county.
