More than forty million euros have been pledged by the German and Finnish governments for a clean drinking water project in Yei.
Last week, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, German Ambassador, and Governor of Yei River State announced the project, which could give up to 90,000 residents safe drinking water using more than 38 water kiosks across Yei.
“Yei used to have a lot of outbreak of cholera and a good number of people died as a result. As a governor, we stand together to work as a team and improve lives” said David Lokonga Moses, Governor of Yei State.
Local youth said they were optimistic about the employment opportunities and working with foreign entrepreneurs.
Mabior Garang, the Minister for Water Resources and Irrigation, said that the project aligns in with South Sudan Vision 2040, the country’s development program.
With the current levels of hunger across, the country, the ministry is focusing on resource rehabilitation projects, Garang said, and gave examples of proposed projects in Renk, Wau, and Greater Equitoria.
The German Ambassador said that his government is focused on raising the capacity of local governments.
“We are united in order to demonstrate how common and united developments can bring back peace to the country” the Ambassador said.
