New Lainya commissioner calls for better roads, education, health care

Augustino Kiri Gwolo the newly appointed commissioner of Lainya County, said Friday that his county needs better roads and education.

Speaking after completing a tour of the payams, he said the payams are not well connected due to bad roads and no bridges. Augustino said better roads would help connect farmers in the rich agricultural lands to consumers.

He said they have a "big challenge" in the education sector becasue there are few primary schools and only one secondary school in the whole county. He said there is a shortage of teachers and most of them are volunteers.

Augustino, who visited Wuji, Kupera, Mukaya, Kenyi, and Lainya payams, said there is a lack of ambulances and medical workers too.

"You find two to three medical staff running the whole Primary Health care centre," he said. "Our people expect more."

He added that there is no media house in Lainya to help the government communicate with the citizens, urging the establishment of an FM station.

"No FM radio, no TV. That is why people only feed on telephone rumours," he said.

"There is no radio so that the government can communicate all its policies down to the people so that the people get the correct information."

Augustino said he was worried about lack of rain which may lead to food shortages.

He further urged the people to stay calm and stick to supporting the implementation of the signed peace agreement, noting that Lainya is a peaceful place and once the peace is implemented there will be development in the county.
