The Stance, a new independent newspaper, has been distributed at the market in the South Sudanese capital Juba this morning.
The paper, which is the English version of Al Maugif Arabic daily, is established under a private entity called Gama Media Company. The designated editors are Atem Simon and Michael Koma.
Atem was chief editor of Al Masier daily newspaper which closed in 2014, while Koma had worked for Juba Monitor newspaper as editorial manager.
The Stance joins a small group of other English-language newspapers distributed in South Sudan’s capital.
Two English newspapers–the Nation Mirror and the Citizen–have been closed by National Security Services this year. The Juba Monitor was prevented from printing Friday over an opinion piece accusing the army of abuses but has since resumed printing.
Security personnel also closed Free Voice, a group known for a drama production for peace-building in South Sudan, at the same time that they shut down Al Rai Arabic newspaper and The Citizen.
