The newly appointed mayor for Bor municipality in Jonglei State has been urged to prioritize the delivery of services to the locals as he assumed duties.
James Gai Makoor was appointed Bor mayor in a gubernatorial decree issued Friday replacing Dr. Agoot Alier who was fired in mid-January.
Gai formerly served as Bor town mayor for about a year until he was relieved in March 2019.
Reacting to Gai’s reappointment, Bior Ajang, an activist in Bor, told Radio Tamazuj that this time around, the mayor should ensure that there is proper drainage in the town and ensure service delivery.
“When he was the mayor, things like the drainage system were not fixed. Thanks to the new roads, the water from the river will not flood Bor town again,” Ajang said. “But where will the rainwater go? So, we want him to start with the drainage system and cleaning of the town.”
He warned that the new mayor will have no legacy to be remembered for if he delivers no services.
For another Bor resident who identified herself only as Yar, the reappointment of Mayor Gai was an error.
“When he was the mayor, we women suffered too much because many homes were demolished without compensation, and instead people were told to go to the villages amidst insecurity,” Yar said. “But now that he is the mayor, he should learn from the past and fix the land issues and commodity prices.”
Bor Municipal Council was created in April 2013.
