The new speaker of Aweil East parliament has vowed to work in collaboration with the executive arm to ensure a smooth working relationship in the state.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj after taking the oath of office before members of the state parliament on Monday, Santo Deng Deng Maluil said he will work for unity so people could speak with one voice.

“I have assumed my duties after I took the oath of office on Monday. I am now in the office and one of my priorities as speaker is to work for unity, reunite our ranks and speak with one voice,” said Santo.

Working together, he said, will help the state parliament and the executive organ to make a difference in the state.

"Hopefully, I would provide the leadership to take the house forward to get things done for the citizens of  Aweil East state and for the betterment  of South Sudan at large,” he said.

Deng was selected last week in a special parliamentary session convened by the state assembly to replace Akoon Diing Angok, who was removed from the position following mounting tensions between the two arms of the state government.

Akoon is a relative and one of the staunch supporters of the ousted army chief, Paul Malong Awan.
